Premise[]

Mei is tired of not having a boyfriend like everyone else, so one day her friend, Jun, introduces her to apps that lets one make their ideal mate.

Yomi's Introduction[]

Yomi greets the Readers, who express curiosity in what she is doing. She explains how recently, free-to-play games have become very popular, and she's found one she really likes. She asks if she should send it to the Readers so that they can try it for themselves.

Summary[]

Mei is becoming really tired of hearing everyone brag about having a significant other; ever since they entered High School it's like everyone hooked up. She doesn't understand why it was so easy for them, why can't she experience their happiness too?

It's then she overhears her friend yell out in frustration, and she explains how she's become attached to a new game as of late. Jun blissfully offers to show it to her but Mei can't focus on her right now, other than thinking that Jun is one of the very few people who don't seem too interested in a relationship. Her screaming manages to attract the attention of the other girls in their class, and they begin picking on them for being so lonely. While Jun doesn't notice, Mei is incredibly pissed off realizing she's been lumped with her in terms of who is still single.

After school she complains about wanting a boyfriend. Jun misunderstands as Mei explains that it isn't the desire to just have a boyfriend, as much as it is that everyone else has one. She shows Mei plenty of app games that would allow her to have as many boyfriends anyone could want, but Mei is disinterested, considering it's not the real thing. Jun goes on to tell Mei that she doesn't have to rush, because she's so cute that she will probably get a boyfriend soon enough. Mei cheers up and thanks Jun as they continue home.

Later, Mei lays around in bed and thinks about what Jun said and she decides to check out the games- to her surprise she finds several, including one called Boyfriend Story, which was rated #1 on the top games list. Since it's free, Mei decides to try it out thinking it could be a fun way to kill some time. She registers herself into the game and the boyfriend creator pops up, allowing her to pick and choose the various features she likes in a guy and his personal information, such as name, blood type, height and weight, etc. She enjoys herself, but now that she's done she feels depressed knowing this guy isn't real. She falls asleep while wondering what it would be like if he was a real guy.

The following morning, Mei is surprised when she wakes up realizing how she fell asleep. She's further alarmed when she realizes someone else is sharing her bed- a very handsome guy. He wakes up and begins to button his top as he realizes it's morning, and when Mei demands an answer he becomes confusing, and he teasingly asks if she forgot what her "boyfriend" looks like. He assumes she is still tired and he offers to help her get ready with a shower, or they could just continue doing what they were doing yesterday, and Mei eventually leaves home extremely flustered by the turn of events. She's still very confused as she observes the boy, who is now in uniform and happily following her through town, and she remarks on how similar he is to Akira, the boy she made in the game. She recalls putting down that she made him good at cooking, and this guy made a lavish breakfast.

Just then, Akira grabs Mei to hold her back from getting hurt. He asks if she is alright because she's been acting tired all morning, leading her to school to avoid being late. Upon arrival they quickly become the talk of the school, with several students staring at the new couple; especially the girls, who swoon over the mysterious new boy. Mei overhears them and gains a nice ego boost. Jun shows up to worriedly ask Mei why she left without her this morning, until she sees Akira. She is surprised as he introduces himself and a staff member comes by with Akira's transfer papers. He's been assigned to Mei's class, and she is shocked to realize that not only is he the Akira she made from the game, but everyone around them has even been manipulated into thinking he is real.

In class, Mei delightfully anticipates everyone's reactions when their tests are given back. Despite not being there, Akira gets the top marks, leaving one girl to angrily shoot Mei a glare as she comforts her boyfriend, as he was the one who usually did the best in their class. Realizing she's won this game of best boyfriend, she continues to gain more confidence.

Throughout the next few days Mei learns that Akira is exactly the same as the way she made him in the game; he is very kind, good at sports, and he's good at fighting if need be. She's been having so much fun that she decides that Akira could become even more perfect, so she starts to add more details to the Akira in-game.

She couldn't have known about the effects this could be having on him.

The next day, some girls walk by Mei when one roughly bumps into her with no remorse. Some boys come over to see if she is okay and they express how jealous the girls have become of Akira. None of them measure up to him, so they aren't happy. The boys ask her what Akira does to have become so popular, and Mei begins to worry as she isn't sure what to say, unaware of Akira's mounting frustrations watching them talk. He comes by to grab her hand and he pulls Mei away, the guys taking off not noticing anything unusual in his behavior. Mei can tell however, because he is pulling her with too much force. She begins to worry that he is mad as he releases her, then he asks what they were talking about. He goes on to apologize for being so rough, and it dons on Mei that he's become jealous of how casual they were speaking. She assures Akira that it's alright and that she loves him no matter what, so she will always stand by his side. Akira is caught off-guard by her sudden declaration but he feels better. As they affectionately express their feelings a girl curiously spies on them.

The following morning at school, Mei and Akira arrive to overhear some girls chatting about a pair of boys being attacked yesterday. Mei is frightened as they go on to reveal that their bodies were so broken up that they were left in a coma since it happened; and they were the classmates she was speaking to yesterday.

Just then Jun calls her over to talk, so in another hallway Mei begins to consider confessing the truth about Akira. Jun is her good friend, so she would understand, and because they barely spent any time together she owes her this much. Jun abruptly tells Mei to break up with Akira, surprising Mei as she goes on to claim he was the one who attacked those boys. Mei doesn't believe her and initially assumes she's just kidding around, but Jun claims that she saw it. He led them somewhere secluded and beat them up, and by now everyone is beginning to talk about him, because he is too perfect, to the point that it's scary. Besides, a guy like him would never really be interested in Mei. They are on two different levels.

Unfortunately, Mei is led to believe that Jun is looking down on her after hearing this. She's saying that Akira is too good for her. This leaves her perturbed because out of everyone she expected Jun to be happy for her. She runs away after yelling at Jun.

in a terrible mood, Mei decides to skip school and she lingers around the classroom after everyone else leaves. She begins to wonder if Akira worried about her, so she goes to search for him, only to discover that he's on top of another girl, appearance disheveled and the area surrounding them a big mess. She is frightened realizing he's angrily strangling the girl, and as she recalls what Jun said earlier, she begins to weep. This alerts Akira to her presence and he expresses disappointment. He didn't want her to see this, but she was badmouthing her. She had to be stopped.

Akira holds Mei while assuring her that he will always love her, since she made him this way. He pulls out her phone and brings up the app, explaining how nobody else would like a girl who puts in little effort- nobody else but him would love her this much. This angers Mei and she grabs her phone, where she quickly scans the terms and conditions page on the app, which she failed to do when she started it. She is alarmed after realizing that setting more than four traits could cause the boy to become corrupt and cause problems, and they are not responsible for any incident that happens as a result.

In grief, Mei falls to the floor as he brings up Jun and how she hurt her that morning. He asks if he should get rid of her, which frightens Mei enough that she gets up to run away from him. She seeks shelter in another room beneath a desk and tries to determine how she can fix this mess she's caused. Just then, several bats are thrown through a nearby window, and Akira shows up reminding Mei of what she said; she would always stand by his side. But is her friend still more important to her?

Mei gathers up her courage to stand up to Akira, expressing that even if they fight sometimes Jun has always been by her side. She knows her better then anyone. She pulls up the app deletion tab on her phone as Akira begins to get closer, and after a moment of hesitation she prepares to hit the YES button, only for him to embrace her suddenly. She remains silent as he pleadingly asks her to reconsider, and he begins to weep. All he wants is to live with Mei.

Mei begins to cry as she recalls their fond memories, but as heartbroken as she feels, she forces herself to select the YES button. Akira vanishes in a flash of light and Mei continues to cry, until remembering that she has to reconcile with Jun still.

She runs out of the school and begins to cheer up, knowing her beloved friend will understand once she explains everything.

She remains surrounded by people who happily continue to play Boyfriend Story, as well as it's girl version- there is even a Child and Friend adaptions. The games are being advertised everywhere, it's causing the birth rate in Japan to go down severely. As Mei runs through the streets, it's said half of the people there are fake.

Mei sees Jun's home in the distance, as Jun complains and opens up the Friend Story app. She wonders if someone like Mei is worth keeping as she opens the deletion tab, unaware that Mei is near her front door. She presses the YES button, causing Mei to disappear in a flash.
