Premise[]
Just who is Yomi? Where did she come from? Why is there a girl who resembles her named Yumi? The truth will be revealed when a young, bullied girl named Nagisa suddenly finds herself living life through someone else...
Summary[]
Nagisa arrives to school to find her desk vandalized. She sadly overhears some girls from nearby laughing at her as she helplessly wonders why this happened. Another girl joins them and Nagisa recognizes her as an old friend; who proceeds to call her a bitch and suggests they leave. Nagisa sits down and recalls that a month ago she had many friends, but now they harass her and spread rumors about her behavior around boys.
Nagisa feels very lonely as she feverishly prepares water to clean her desk when their Teacher arrives. She asks if she is okay and offers to speak to their parents, which Nagisa momentarily considers until she hears them badmouth her further. She is sure her bullying would increase so she asks her Teacher not to. Besides, she was going to be leaving so she can't always protect her. Nagisa cries and runs out of the room as the girls make fun of her. Their Teacher tries to follow her but another staff member stops her, suggesting that her interference would just make it worse. He would be stuck dealing with their complaining parents too.
Nagisa locks herself in the supply closet and continues to cry while begging for someone to take her away from this. Suddenly, she becomes startled by a voice unfamiliar to her and a photo album falls to the floor. She curiously observes the page its opened on while wondering if she was just hearing things, only to become distracted by a pretty girl in one of the pictures. The voice suddenly returns, along with a mysterious figure when lightning flashes outside and Nagisa faints.
Suddenly, Nagisa awakens to find herself in a classroom and she notices that everyone is in their winter uniforms. She was wearing a spring uniform earlier. As she attempts to gather her thoughts someone approaches her and addresses her as Makoto, leading Nagisa to look in the nearby mirror to realize she looks like someone else. She instantly panics feeling a hand on her shoulder, assuming she will be bullied until the girl kindly informs her that class is switching now. While trying to determine what happened Nagisa calms herself down. Her wish must have been granted.
Suddenly, the pretty girl from the picture bumps into her. Nagisa watches as the girl gets scolded for being late to class and a few girls nearby plead with the teacher to forgive the girl. Throughout class Nagisa is much happier seeing how kind everyone is and she is unaware of the girl -Yumi- observing her until class ends. She remains in class as everyone is leaving and Nagisa decides to wait in the hall for her, but to her surprise she witnesses a girl run up to Yumi and kicks the back of her head, causing her to fall against several desks. Nagisa is horrified seeing the blood seep from the injury and she notices Die has been written on her shoe.
The girls make fun of her and reveal themselves as the reason she was so late earlier- they stole her shoe and wrote on it, then hid it from her. Nagisa helplessly sheds a tear as a few disgusted male classmates pass the display of bullying, and she wonders why she was brought to this place. The girls see her and offer "Makoto" to join them, but she is too startled to respond. To her surprise Yumi rises and defends herself, telling them to stop. This angers the leader of the bullies, but with the Teacher returning they are unable to do anything right now.
They leave and Nagisa approaches Yumi to see if she is alright, but Yumi tells her to go or else they could target her next time. Nagisa refuses and realizes that Makoto must be Yumi's friend. She recalls how much pain she feels dealing with her own bullying and doesn't want Yumi to feel alone like her, so she decides to be her protector. She brings Yumi to another room with her dirtied shoe and scrubs the writing off of it, then returns it to her. Initially Yumi is silent, but she quietly thanks her before smiling and pointing out how dirty "Makoto's" face is. Nagisa is flustered by this, but she finds Yumi admirable for being able to remain strong despite how much she is bullied.
Unfortunately the moment is disturbed by the bullies, who feel betrayed by Makoto and demand an explanation before separating them. Nagisa is cornered and they admit that as of late they had been considering making her their next target, and they yell at her before demanding she choose a side- she can bully Yumi with them or be bullied.
Nagisa helplessly wonders why she was brought to this place when the bullying never ceased like she thought. But it never goes away, and she has come to realize that. She must support Yumi and she refuses to be afraid anymore. She bluntly tells them off and says that no matter what they plan on doing to her, she would never become a bully.
To her shock, this doesn't even phase the girls. They force her into the nearby Home Ec room and force her to lean onto the table next to a gas stove, which they turn on with the intent of burning her as a frightened Yumi is held back.
Suddenly the leader gets an idea and has Yumi be released. She offers her the chance to be free from bullying, if she chooses to bully Makoto in her place. Nagisa is alarmed as Yumi approaches her, but to her relief Yumi frees her from their grasp and pulls her aside. It's then she realizes she is being gently pushed back, near the open window behind them. The girls encourage Yumi to push her out -with one concerned over the fall height, as they are on the third floor- while shedding tears.
Nagisa asks her why before she falls from the window.
